Transformational Leadership
Preface
Transformational leadership has
rapidly become the approach of choice for much of the research and application
of leadership theory. In many ways, transformational leadership has captured
the imagination of scholars, of noted practitioners, and of students of
leadership. Research on transformational leadership and related charismatic
approaches has grown exponentially—so much so that a new edition of this book,
originally published in 1998, was necessary.
This revised book is intended for
both scholars and serious students of leadership. It is a comprehensive review
of theorizing and empirical research on transformational leadership that can
serve as a reference and starting point for additional research on the theory.
In addition, we have tried to make the book reader friendly, with many current
and historical examples. It could be used as a supplementary textbook in an
intense course on leadership or as a primary textbook in a course or seminar
focusing on transformational leadership—particularly if accompanied by
Developing Potential Across a Full Range of Leadership: Cases on Transactional
and Transformational Leadership (Avolio & Bass, 2002).
This new edition has been greatly expanded,
with more than double the number of references in the previous edition. Many
new, updated examples of leadership have been included to help illustrate
concepts as well as show the broad range of transformational leadership in a
variety of settings. New chapters have been added focusing specificallyon the
measurement of effectiveness of transformational leadership. Greatly expanded
is the discussion of both predictors and effects of transformational
leadership. Importantly, there is much more emphasis on authentic versus
inauthentic transformational leadership. Finally, suggestions are made for
guiding the future of research and for applications of transformational
leadership.
